Instructor: Marc Lavine

Did you know that visual images have been used throughout history by people in power, or those seeking it, as a way to intimidate, inform and inspire? Well before the modern era of propaganda, “power art” was utilized by leaders to control and influence their subjects. Join historian and retired USN European history teacher MARC LAVINE, as she offers an overview of the key images in the field of "power art" from Egypt to the 20th century, highlighting the ways in which art and architecture have created symbols of authority in addition to making aesthetic statements. Common examples of such art include Louis XIV’s Versailles, Roman altars, and the massive busts of Stalin, which were designed to broadcast the goals and methods of each leader. This class will conclude with an in-depth look at the interesting relationship between Futurism and Fascism.

Marc received a PhD from Vanderbilt in Modern European History with a specialization in Modern Italy.
