Leaders have inspired civic activism in a variety of ways, through protests, petitions, poetry, and countless others. USN parent of an alumnus and former Nashville Mayor MEGAN BARRY and comedian JOSH BLACK will lead a conversation about the ways comedy can bring both joy with laughter, and also resonate the challenges facing our community. At a time when our democracy is being threatened, we need to use every tool in our toolbox to raise awareness and engage citizens. This will be an evening class unlike any other.

Megan Barry is the former mayor of Nashville, TN, the first woman to be elected to the office. While she was in office, she lost her only son, Max, to a drug overdose. Since leaving her position, Barry is working to combat the shame and guilt that comes from this soul-sucking disease and to help those who struggle with substance use disorder and their loved ones by speaking up and speaking out. Megan currently serves on the board of H.A.R.T and the Women’s Fund for the Community Foundation.  She has been an invited speaker for numerous organizations and events including TedX Nashville, the International Women’s Forum, Georgia Pacific, National Overdose Awareness Days, and many others.

Josh Black is a stand-up comedian based in Nashville and viral sensation. His standup act is riveting and his social media videos highlighting life in Tennessee have garnered over 25 million views. Josh is a regular at Zanies Comedy Club and is frequently featured in the Nashville Scene.
