USN alumni parent MEGAN BARRY dedicates her time to speak publicly in this class about her own family’s tragic struggle with addiction. Substance abuse carries a stigma that can cripple a family's ability to address the issue. Megan shares her experiences as well as ideas to help people overcome the shame and guilt surrounding a loved one's addiction. Megan relates specific actions we can take to confront this crisis, including instructions on how to obtain and carry NARCAN for emergency use. Please join her for an honest conversation and a fresh perspective on this urgent health issue that affects us all.
Megan Barry is the former Mayor of Nashville, TN. She was the first woman to be elected to the office. She is also a former councilmember at-large. Her professional experience includes working as a corporate executive, independent consultant focusing on business ethics and corporate responsibility and as an adjunct professor. She her MBA from Vanderbilt University and currently serves on the board of the Women’s Fund for the Community Foundation. She has previously served on several boards including the YWCA of Middle TN, and the Center for Non-Profit Management. She has been invited to speak at TedX Nashville, the International Women’s Forum, Georgia Pacific, OZY Media, National Overdose Awareness Day and many other organizations. After losing her son to a drug overdose in 2017, Barry is working to combat the opioid crisis and help those struggling with addiction by speaking up and speaking out.
